The Tiger of Mysore A Story of the War with Tippoo Saib eBook G A George Alfred Henty

I am afraid I must disagree with another reviewer of this book.

It is in fact you Mr. Harish who appears biased and uninformed of the time period of this story.

That G.A. Henty was biased towards his own country is without a doubt. Although if you read any number of his books you will see criticism of Great Britain too.

Now as to the matter of imperialism, I would like to point out that one cannot look at matters of history with the rose tinted glasses of the present day. Just as the Roman empire helped civilize a then very uncivil world, and not forgetting the time period, perhaps G.A. Henty saw the advantages that COULD be gained by both sides.

As to the British being "sent from heaven," that's hardly the truth, as you said. However I truly do not see how any student of history, COULD NOT see how immensely better off the Indians were after the British began ruling.

I would like to kindly suggest that you research these matters beforehand, instead of taking your opinions (and quotes) from Wikipedia.

My review:
"The Tiger of Mysore" by G.A. Henty, is very typical of Henty's format. Which if you read any great number of his books will lead to boredom. It does contain his opinions (clearly marked as such), but is historically accurate for the time period. It also contains the typical nomenclature of his day. Which can be seen as racist if not viewed in its historical context.

Enjoy.

The Tiger of Mysore A Story of the War with Tippoo Saib eBook G A George Alfred Henty Reviews

A wonderful Henty book, as usual! The main character is named Dick, and he and his friend are searching Tippoo's forts (in disguise) for Dick's father, who was captured several years before the story starts. In the process they save an English slave girl from a harem, encounter tigers, robbers, and narrowly escape discovery and capture several times. A very good book, and historicaly accurate.
The Tiger of Mysore is one of my favorite Henty books. It is the story of a young man, Dick, who is 3/4 English and 1/4 Indian. His father is reported to be killed in India, but his family knows enough to believe him a captive. Dick takes his mother to India to live with her brother, a raja, while he searches for his father while disguised as a native. Adventure and excitment follow as he takes up the profession of tiger-hunting as a cover. While at a public gathering, a huge tiger breaks loose and leaps into the Sultan's harem. Dick comes to the rescue, kills the tiger, and finds out that you can get killed for seeing the harem girls. After assuring the Sultan he only saw the tiger, he is rewarded by the Sultan and his(very wealthy)wives. Dick is also appointed a post in the palace, but escapes when asked to execute an English prisioner. He also rescues a young English girl from the palace. Dick returns to his uncle's house, drops off jewels/girl and heads off to restart his search. This time he is succesful. He returns home to England with his parents, marries the girl, and spends the rest of his days in luxury.
A bit tedious in the description of the battles. Since these books were written for the benefit of older schoolboys the book did detail the fight for India from a British perspective. The story is very much in the background.
Well done!

Very interesting - good introduction for an American with regards to British colonial history. Can't wait to read the next Henty novel.
Henty is always a winner. If you want light, action packed novels, he's always great to read! A book for boys only? Hogwash!
Great book for young adults. Historically it is factual so again good book for young people interested In History
A mother and son go to 18th century India to rescue the dad who was captured by murderous Raja. It's a story full of good travel details, hair raising adventure, and all the Henty level luck in the world.
