Here are my reviews of each one of the four stories in this sweet holiday compilation:

1. Snow and Mistletoe by Kasie West (5 stars)
An adorable story about a girl going in a last-minute road trip with a former classmate, his two crazy friends and his older sister. The ending was so cute it left me smiling. Who wouldn't like to spend 3 days in a car with the swoon-worthy Sawyer and his friends? This story alone made it worth the price of the entire book for me. I also loved the scene on Las Vegas, it made me want to go there again. Another win for Kasie West!

2. Working in a Winter Wonderland by Aimee Friedman (4 stars)
A story about a Jewish girl spending her winter holidays in NY trying to win the heart of her crush by working as Santa’s elf in a high-end store. I really liked that it was set during Hanukkah, however, the romance felt a little forced to me. We didn’t get to know the hero too well, as the first part of the book was focused on something else. It had some fun moments though, and I liked the setting and the cast of characters.

3. The Magi’s Gifts by Melissa de la Cruz (4 1/2 stars)
A sweet story about a lower middle class girl trying to find the perfect Christmas gift for her boyfriend and trying to impressing her rich, snooty friends at the same time. Although the ending made me feel a tiny bit sad, I really liked this story and its focus on happiness for the ones we love being worth any sacrifice. Extra points for focusing on the true spirit of Christmas.

4. Grounded by Nic Stone (2 stars)
The "non-heteronormative" (i.e. gay) romance promoting “diversity” that seems to be mandatory nowadays in any YA collection, featuring an African-American/Jewish girl falling for another girl and feeling confused about it. The beginning of the story was a long series of texts between the heroine and her best friend that was extremely hard to read on my Kindle due to the small font, and the quality of the writing didn’t seem to me to be on par with the rest of the stories in this collection. Couldn't finish it.

In summary, the first 3 stories were worth my time and I definitely plan on reading them again on Christmas. Kudos to the authors for a job well done. :)

Snow in Love Point Paperbacks Melissa de la Cruz Aimee Friedman Nic Stone Kasie West 9781338310184 Books Reviews

Good book
I wanted to wait closer to Christmas to read this, but for some reason the holidays always bring out a contemp romance feeling in me so I "accidentally" picked this one up lol And not to be cliche or anything, but I'm so glad I did! This was EXACTLY what I needed at this time.
Snow and Mistletoe by Kasie West was one of my favorites. It was completely sweet and set the tone for the rest of the book. It completely obliterated my reasoning for not being a huge fan of anthologies because short stories never really feel complete. This one definitely did like its own story all on its own. As for the characters, I loved all of them. They were all so fun and so interacted so well with each other. The romance itself was super swoony and I really enjoyed seeing them get together.
In Aimee Friedman's Working in a Winter Wonderland, I really enjoyed this one too. It definitely felt more real than the first story. A real girl, trying to get money so she can buy this one amazing thing so this one amazing boy will follow. And then things don't exactly happen as she thinks they will. This was filled with so much holiday realness and magic and I actually enjoyed this one a lot more than I expected. (I've never read anything by Friedman before so I was a little skeptical.) It didn't go in the way that I expected, and I think that's what I enjoyed most about it.
In Melissa de la Cruz's The Magi's Gifts, I wasn't really that into it. Being honest, it reminded me of the Disney show, Mickey and Minnie's The Gift of the Magic. This was a nice retelling of the O. Henry story, but I just didn't find it worked with teens. I just can't see a teen boy selling what he did in the story. I know that's the point, but ehh, it just didn't work for me.
As for Nic Stone's Grounded, I really liked this one. It was fun and wasn't overly "Christmas-y" and I think that's what I loved most about it. It was around the holidays, but it could be enjoyed at any time. I really loved so versatile it was. And also that scavenger hunt was super legit lol Her clues were SO. GOOD. I kept thinking of it in Nic Stone's voice as she's rapping it lol It was pretty awesome.
Overall this anthology was just what I needed. It really scratched my itch for multiple things I've been wanting to read. I'm glad I didn't wait to read this any longer than I did. These authors and their work actually worked really well together for a nice sweet read that I really enjoyed.
Kasie West's story in this compilation was just as great as her books. Even in a novella, she managed to create depth to the characters and made me care about and like them and want to root for them. That being said, the other three stories were just okay. The romance in the second story basically didn't develop at all until the last couple of pages, which then felt rushed and not authentic at all. The third story was a retelling of Gift of the Magi, and was cute but obviously predictable. And I didn't even read the last story, just skimmed it, as much of it was told through awkward text message conversations, the kind with misspelled on purpose dialogue and slang which I found obnoxious. So basically, all 3 of these stars are for Kasie West, who is the whole reason I bought the book. Next time I will stick to her solo novels.
