Red Alert An NYPD Red Mystery James Patterson Marshall Karp 9781455542659 Books Reviews

Once again James Patterson has written a fast paced, joy ride through New York's dark underbelly. Kylie & Zach of the elite NYPD RED Squad are faced with not one, but two complicated murder cases. One involving a master bomber and another a murder that has sordid sexual overtones. Lots of good characters keep the story lines intriguing and as breathless as Kylie & Zach are, as they pursue the resolution of the two investigations. Well worth reading.
Another really good book. You never lose interest in Patterson books. Sometimes with a couple of co authors there have been books I didn't care for.
I don’t know if Patterson actually helped write this book because most of the books he co-authors aren’t that good, which leads me to the opinion that when JP co-authors a book, it’s written entirely by someone else who uses Patterson’s name on the cover in order to boost sales. With that being said the nypd red series is phenomenal and this story is the best on yet.
The top cops of RED quickly find themselves juggling multiple crimes, difficult survivors, usual and unusual perpetrators. Zach & Kylie are treated to the "rich people travel style" in order to find the perpetrator of unique explosions. But how does Thailand for in. Then there are Haitians. And experts in sexual deviance add another search. So, how do they juggle and solve so many cases. Plus, Zach helped solve another crime off the books.

Prepare to have time to read, this will be hard to put down.
An excellent read. Enjoyed all the NYPD series and this one was really good also. There are several murders, several different suspects. This is a detailed, fast moving story. The reasons for the murders and robbery and so much more are perfectly brought to light. I love the way the main story ended, right or wrong, it had to end that way.
This would make a terrific tv movie!.
Hats off to Mr Patterson and Mr Karp for yet another enjoyable read.
Loved the main characters and the captivating story line BUT sadly the detailed pornography and over-the-top f-bombs throughout was a cheezy addition. So distasteful and unnecessary because the story content sells itself. Alex Cross, Michael Bennett and the Women's Murder Club novels are always a success without the excess profanity and porn.
This is just really a fantastic series. Red Alert showed up as an item I might be interested in because I read a lot of crime/mystery/whodunnit books. Once I realized this was the 5th in an ongoing series, I started with the first NYPD Red and concluded with this one. I read all 5 books in about a week. Love the way that these books read like a movie. And the last couple have been really ramped up, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Zach and Kylie.

The reason I like these books is that the humor/romantic elements (I’m team Zach and Cheryl) help to balance out the murderous plots. I’m also a fan of the Bosch series, but those are more gritty and hard hitting, and can leave me feeling a little heavy when I finish them. That’s why I liked the levity and action in the Red series. I don’t even worry about figuring out who did what, I just go along for the ride and let everything play out. I hope they make many more.
The repetetive use of the word 'judder' and its varying forms was bothersome but far worse was the main character of Jenny and how everything in her story reads as if she's speaking to her three year old daughter, Gracie. There were no breaks of Jenny's inner dialogue reverting back to her own thoughts (Jenny is telling the story from first person but seemingly only to her young daughter, which is pointed out often) so it was very jarring to read her description of having sex as if it was being told to her very young child. Jenny related the entire graphic description of her sexual encounter as it was happening and in the middle of sex stated that she recalled losing her virginity and then of 'giving birth to you, my love" as if telling her child about it, all while oral sex is being performed on her. It was very, very off-putting. Jen also has very unkind thoughts of Gracie's father and since so many paragraphs include Jenny's term of endearment for little Gracie ("my love") it was very difficult to get into the story since it seemed like highly inappropriate dialogue to be having with a toddler! I am only partway through the book but for this reason I may be unable to finish it. I think it was a very poor choice for the author to give the character's voice an autobiographical feel but with the character's three year old child as the seemingly only intended audience. It comes across as disturbing, inappropriate, and dare I say? Juddering.

Gracie Secret A heartbreaking page turner that will stay with you forever edition by Jill Childs Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

From the beginning, the narrator had the sick self-absorption of all those Gone Girl mentally unbalanced British unreliable narrator types. Add to that, the unhealthy total worshipping of Gracie, and you have a book I wanted to get away from, fast. From the first moment we meet Matt, there is a creepy vibe that never lets up. Maybe the narrator is clueless, but I doubt any self- respecting reader fell for his stories and lies. In the immortal words of Roberto Duran, “No Mas,”
If you are a mother or a grandmother, I do not know how you could ever start to read this novel and not be compelled to finish it. I just happen to have a 3 year old granddaughter who I love so very much. Maybe that is another reason why I often needed tissues while reading this book... I liked this author's style...I felt her descriptions and wordings flowed well throughout the book. Her choice of words evoked strong emotions in me. There were some good uses of foreshadowing, which I will not mention here so as to not spoil anything for the reader. The one thing I questioned though was the "big words" and mature sentences that Gracie used as a three year old... I know Gracie was close to four, but unless she was truly a gifted child, I do not know of any normal 3 year old that speaks in such a manner. However, it was not enough of a distraction to take away from the story. I really liked this book and definitely recommend it.
This book went on way too long. I found it very upsetting and not my cup of tea. The characters weren’t well defined which made the book a lot less interesting. I wanted more info about the marriage, no reason given for the split.
Let me start with one positive thought, since I'll bash this with no mercy afterwards. If you can ignore the religious cliches and hundreds of pages of "I love yous," gushing like geysers on every page, there really is a suspenseful mystery underneath it all. As such, I couldn't put the book down, painful as it was, simply to get to the end and see why I wasted my time. But even that requires a big stretch of the imagination. Are we to believe that a woman dating a doctor for all that time would not get suspicious of a man with no friends or family that she can see, who never invites her to his home, never takes her to his work, and can in fact never be reached at work? (She was even told there is no doctor by that name, duh.) For her stupidity alone I have zero empathy for the character Jenny. She comes across as an airhead who never thinks about anything in any depth, believes just about anything, and has no interests in her life beyond her devotion to her child. No wonder her husband ran for his life. Sorry if I offend, but I really wanted her daughter to die at the end because I couldn't stand Jenny any longer. As for the religious mumb-jumbo, couldn't the author think of something a little more interesting than dying and seeing a bright light and being greeted by a kind old man? Seriously? It terrifies me beyond all else that so many people can fall for this excuse of a novel and give it good reviews. It could have stood on its own as a second-rate mystery without St. Michael & company. Oh, and I agree with all who raised the issue of writing in second person to her daughter. I suppose the author thought it very creative. It's painful to read and often jarring (as in the sex scene). Trash at its worst.
As a mother I was sickened by Jennifer's obsessive behavior with her daughter. This was not love! Jennifer was a deeply flawed character who created chaos around her. This book did not bring me to tears but rather nausea. Very sad in a sick way. I could not recommend this book.
And then I juddered with disgust at the egregious overuse of the word “juddered.” It’s as if the author learned one “big” word and then had to use it — over, and over, and over — throughout this tiresome story of this ignorant mother and the rest of the one-dimensional characters in this tedious book. I juddered with relief as I skipped to the end, when the cardboard characters played out their tiresome ends and the story finally came to a juddering conclusion. Don’t waste your ninety-nine cents.
[...]

I was drawn to the story because the horse and the family needed healing on many levels. I wanted to know more about how the horse and teenager were rehabilitated. Tom Booker, a.k.a. the Horse Whisperer, was an appealing character because he was a very balanced person. It was his role to be the healer. He had his wounds, but used them intuitively to help others. The author portrayed him as a spiritual sort of guy. Suddenly, we are led to believe that he has an epiphany: He needs Annie! Unfortunately, their mutual desire was portrayed on a superficial level. Tom kept remembering her eyes, her smile, etc. This was teenage crush material; not at all in keeping with his stature or implied integrety. Furthermore, without giving the ending of the book away, Tom's final decision was totally unbelievable to me, considering the fact that he'd earned the teenage girl's trust. Just what she needed, more fodder for Post-Traumatic Stress disorder!

The Horse Whisperer Nicholas Evans Books Reviews

I saw this movie quite some time ago. Recently scrolling thru the kindle books I came across this book. It was so well-written I could not put it down. All of the characters in the book were believable and the relationship between mother and daughter so real. They both fought thru their own demons in their life, with strength and courage and let them go. Tom, the whisperer, with his magical touch not only with pilgrim, but with Annie and Grace.. brought them all back from hell to happy beings. The love that Tom shared with Annie, was so deep that Tom just could not live without her. After reading it, I watched the movie again. This book blew the movie away! In all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves horses and would also enjoy a very rewarding experience in love and life's lessons thru a book that is well worth the time to read.
We talk about humans mentally healing after a catastrophic event, but animals can also have horrifying memories of events. Each can heal separately, but interacting with each other can revive horrible memories.
The Horse Whisperer, was able to enable both human and animal to bond into a new relationship.
Love this book! Much better than the movie! A must read!
The name of this book speaks for itself, for I think there are surely few who have not heard of the movie made from this book THE HORSE WHISPERER. Nicholas Evans encapsulates human personalities, love, and the magnetism of sexual attraction--all with his amazing, constant skill. As in all the books I've read by this fantastic author, there is a strong thread of integrity in his writings, and also a very ongoing theme of human nature. His love of animals and his incredible fathoming of the workings of the minds of various personalities, regardless of age or gender, always make for a "terrific read." LOVE all this author has written, and even if one has viewed the movie, don't eschew reading the book. It's well worth the experience.
OK, so, this is a good story, has a great "overcoming tragedy" to become something greater, however, I feel like the author loses you when you begin to see the overdrawn affair between two of the main characters. There's not need to add in something like an affair in a story such as this, because all it does is pull away from the main point of the story. Not a book for a child to read, gives some very inappropriate references for their eyes to read.
and I listened! I remember reading the "tease" of this book almost 20 years ago in "McCalls women's magazine" or at least I think that was the name of the magazine (something I rarely ever did but I was in a waiting room of a doctor's office and I needed something to occupy my time and the name of the magazine isn't important for this review - I was hooked on this story and even began thinking who would be the lead male actor in the movie. And I got it so right - Robert Redford was the actor I imagined and Hollywood must have read my mind!) Not really a romantic novel fan, I "romantically" fell in love with this story and was hooked from the "tease" in the magazine and eagerly awaited the book coming out. These were the days before my magic . I enjoyed Sparks' beautiful painting of complex relationships - not just between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, lover and lover, but also humans and animals as well! I think I have read it at least three times. Again I am not usually a romance novel fan but this one hooked me from beginning to end. Sculpted with texture weaving the story that kept me reading page after page long into the night. I recommend it.
I loved the movie where Tom Booker played a character who represented both wisdom and integrity. Nothing in this book, unlike the movie, indicates why he would become so entranced with Annie, his opposite. In the movie, she initially reminded him of his first wife. I enjoyed the parts of the book that matched the plot of the movie. Not to give away the ending I’ll only say thay my mouth was hanging open by it. So out of character as to be unbelievable. I’m going to watch the movie again to erase that part of the book from my mind.

Suddenly, we are led to believe that he has an epiphany He needs Annie!
Charley Davidson is a part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper – she sees dead people and it’s her job to convince them to go to the light. When her charges die in mysterious circumstances, they sometimes want her to help them and their loved ones find justice.

I’m generally not a huge fan of “paranormal romantic suspense,” but I picked this up because of the setting – Albuquerque, New Mexico, which I live very close to. I liked that Charlie comes from a family of cops, and that her family values her talent, even if they don’t exactly understand it. Well, everyone but her evil stepmother, that is. I struggled a little bit with the plotline involving the Entity (that’s right, entity with a capital E), the Big Bad who has been following Charlie her entire life, and who has killed to protect her. At first it (It?) was interesting, but then got annoying by the end of the book.

Pluses: Albuquerque setting – well described; the characters – really well established for a first in a series; the relationship between Charlie and her family and friends; frequently funny dialogue; and good writing. One of my favorite exchanges between Charlie and her uncle, a cop: “Before I could argue, he said, ‘We found Mr. Rivera floating in the Rio Grande.’ ‘Maybe he was thirsty,’ I offered. ‘Have you ever tasted the Rio Grande?’ ‘Not lately,’ I said, wondering when he had. And why. And if he carried any parasites because of it.” Another time, Charlie gets banged up on the job and then later runs into the guy in question while she’s got an armload of groceries. “’Ms. Davidson, I didn’t mean to hit you.’ I raised (my gun) again and arched my brows in question. I thought about throwing my grocery bags at him and making a run for it, but those avocados were expensive. Damn my love of guacamole.”

Minuses: The Big Bad was intriguing at first, but things just got a little too woo-woo by the end of the book for me. Also, there are some fairly racy sex scenes, which I just ended up paging past. A little TMI, for my tastes.

On balance, I enjoyed the witty banter, characters and writing style enough that I am going to check out book 2 in the series and see where that goes.

First Grave on the Right Charley Davidson Series Darynda Jones Books Reviews

This was a fun and quick read. Still trying to determine if I'll continue reading the rest of the series or not. I'm actually not much for series, but Charley Davidson is one of the most fun lead series characters in books that were recommended to me by friends who love such books. SPOILER ALERT the only thing I didn't understand is why she didn't know that the woman she tried to help escape her abusive husband was dead. Wouldn't she have to pass through Charley since she's a grim reaper? And why wouldn't she have let Charley know? I had a hard time with that part and would've liked some kind of explanation about that.

However overall I appreciated the wit and pace of the book. That made it a super fun, light read.
Did you expect a book about a grim reaper to be grim? Not in the capable hands of this terrific author. Charley is a lot of fun while interacting with the departed. Following her antics from scene to scene was so entertaining that I got pulled deeper and deeper into the story without realizing it. I started to care as much about these characters as Charley did, although she would have denied that she did.

Then there is Reyes, who is in a category all by himself. An extremely sexy, very intriguing, and tantalizingly elusive category.

By the time I reached the end of this book, I realized what a feat this author had pulled off. Because the story is so entertaining, it's easy to breeze through it without realizing its vast scope. There are many elements and an assortment of characters, and the author juggles them all without dropping the ball once. I am completely immersed in Charley's world.
Have you ever had that moment where you read a book and instantly knew you were going to be in love forever with the series? That is how I felt when I read First Grave on the Right. Charley Davidson’s character was hilarious! I adored the fact that she is a part-time PI and that she has the ability to see dead people. Not just see them but interact with them as well.

The supporting characters in this story are also top notch, both the living and the dead. I laughed throughout this entire story at the antics Charley pulls and her friend Cookie is always there backing her right up one way or another. I liked that Charley did actually investigate crimes, usually ones that had been done to the victim who came to her for help. Everything about First Grave on the Right was just amazing! This is a book and a series that I highly recommend!

This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
Charley Davidson is a grim reaper, yes she talks to ghost and helps them on their journey to the other side. It's hard to introduce herself as Grim Reaper extraordinaire so in her real life she is a PI who works closely with her homicide detective Uncle solving cases with the ghosts who have unfinished business. Charley seems to always be in the center of something and when three lawyers end up dead, Charley is on the case. Her Uncle has paired her with enemy PI Garrett Swopes who doesn't believe in ghosts and questions her at every turn, that is when he is not flirting with her. Problem is despite Garrett's good looks, Charley's interest is in Reyes Farrow who is seeking her out in her dreams but Charley is not sure what Reyes is.

This was a pleasant surprise. Charley is an unexpected delight, she is quirky, sassy and one of the most intriguing characters I have read recently. I was completely pulled in by this story and eager to read more and find out what is up with Charley. Great characters add to a fantastic read.
A fascinating world, an intriguing prophecy, and awesome and deadly powers are just a few of the things that make FROSTBLOOD a thrilling and riveting one-sit read. Add in a curse, a quest for vengeance, epic clashes between fire and ice, gladiator-esque arena battles, dark forces, secrets, betrayal, tragedy, and a bit of romance, and you have a story that is unputdownable.

Ruby is a Fireblood living in a world where who she is could get her imprisoned or killed. Frostbloods fear and hate her kind and the Frostblood King uses Firebloods for sport. Born without the fiery red hair that would immediately identify her as an enemy, all she had to do was suppress her abilities and she could escape notice.

But her curiosity about her powers and her carelessness in concealing them meant discovery was inevitable. She just never imagined her mistakes would cost her the one person in the world that she loved.

Ruby was prepared to accept her fate - a quick death by the hand of the King or a slow death in prison. But when offered the chance to escape, to avenge her loss, and to attempt to take down the Frostbloods' dark ruler, she accepted. Even if the chance of success was slim and even if it meant working with her enemies to do so. Because even if they ultimately failed, the alliance would help her master her fiery powers and help keep alive the flames of rage that burned in her heart.

Elly Blake penned an amazing start to her series. She gave readers a heroine who is powerful, flawed, interesting, and sympathetic. She created a world steeped it in myth, with a captivating and exciting history, filled it with citizens whose abilities are polar opposites, a bevy of exotic creatures, and a ruler whose cruelty knows no bounds, and set it at a time when battles to the death were entertainment, when prophecies and legends were more than just stories, and when being a ruler corrupted or killed.

FROSTBLOOD is a standout in a genre brimming with tales of evil rulers, dark magic, incredible abilities, and clashing clans. It reveals a past that is every bit as engaging as the story’s present. It introduces characters to root for. It builds a strong foundation for the story’s continuation in books to come. It leaves readers in anticipation of what’s next without leaving them dangling off a cliff. And it does all this in a way that makes for an enthralling and heartbreaking and absolutely extraordinary read.

Frostblood The Frostblood Saga Elly Blake Books Reviews

When I first started reading, I was a little worried because of some similarities to other YA novels. However, I found it interesting enough to keep reading and I’m SO glad that I did. I ended up finishing this book in a day because I couldn’t put it down (or if I had to, I schemed to figure out a way to pick it back up again).

Even though some of the plot elements feel similar to other novels and there are some YA tropes, this book truly manages to differentiate itself from the very beginning. Every time I thought I could guess where the plot was going next, I was wrong. The author subverted many of my expectations through the inclusion of some unexpected scenes. Training of the chosen one is usually glossed over, however Ruby’s training (and her struggles with it) is actually one of the best parts of this book. There was an excellent balance of action and quieter scenes and, while I was left with some questions, the world-building was done quite well.

*One note, this book started off rather shockingly and there are some somewhat graphic scenes later on.

The characterization of both the main characters and the secondary ones is wonderful. Ruby is feisty, sassy, and has a will of iron. We spent a good deal of time with Ruby as she struggled with her training, her emotions, and her past. Seeing what she went through and showing the reader her flaws made me truly care for her. She’s flawed and we can see how she grapples with some of her decisions, particularly some of the darker ones. In this book, characters do have to face the consequences of their actions, something that I personally quite like in a book.

Plus that romance! It’s a hate-to-love romance and it built very naturally, the progression fitting with the both of the characters’ personalities. Arcus has demons and scars of his own and the original barriers between the two of them were quite understandable. What this book does very well is showing how the walls between them start to come down. I loved that they both had to face their own fears and prejudices (and mature quite a bit) as their relationship progressed.

This book was utterly captivating, enchanting, and engrossing. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys YA high fantasy or potentially high fantasy in general (while it is YA, the characters are on the more mature side). I’m already anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

*I received a free eARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
So many people have already rated this book so I doubt this will be read by anyone. But here goes anyway.

These two books... Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers, though the books didn't have any other worldly characters or monsters, doesn't make it any less terrifying and leaves to our imagination that there may be some very real monsters who may live next-door and we just don't know about it.

These two books are classic King which means a total page turner and gripping suspense to the last.

Stephen King has said that he doesn't write about extra ordinary people who deal with normal things but instead he writes about regular people who are in extraordinary situations. That's almost a direct quote from him.

I enjoyed every part of it. I listened to the audible versions of these two books and say that the narrator was one of the best that I've ever heard and was so completely appropriate for these Stephen King books. Only having Stephen King narrate them could have been any better.

I highly recommend these two books and state unequivocably that this is the best "King" writing that he is done in about five years.

Finders Keepers A Novel The Bill Hodges Trilogy Stephen King Books Reviews

Bill Hodges, Jerome Robinson, and Holly Gibney return in this excellent 2nd book of the Hodges trilogy.

John Rothstein is a famous writer who has written a series called "The Runner". The primary character of the series is named Jimmy Gold. Despite the success of his series, Rothstein became somewhat of a recluse, and never published anything after the third book in the series. This didn't sit well with Morris Bellamy, an obsessed fan of the series. It was always rumored that Rothstein left notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel.

Morris and two accomplices pay a visit to Rothstein. In the ensuing encounter, Rothstein is killed and Morris finds the rumored manuscripts. He hides his treasure in an old trunk, but ends up arrested for rape and is locked away for 35 years. In the ensuing time, a boy named Pete Saubers and his family move into Morris' old house and he locates the trunk and its contents. Pete's father was injured in the Mr. Mercedes attack a few years before. Now, Bill, Jerome, and Holly must help Pete and his family, for Morris has been paroled and has come back to claim what he believes belongs to him. Will they be able to help, or will Morris get the manuscripts at the expense of Pete and his family? Bill must also deal with the unsettling feelings that Brady Hartsfield, the Mr. Mercedes killer who has been locked away in a brain injury clinic, is slowly coming out of his stupor.

Simply put, this is a great series. The characters are well-developed, the story is loaded with twists, and it keeps getting better with each book. Stephen King has done a masterful job of creating a very believable set of circumstances that the characters must work their way through, and the reader is drawn in immediately. I can't wait for the next book, "End of Watch". Highly recommended.
After reading Mr. Mercedes I had to buy this second book in the trilogy of Bill Hodges. It was like quicksand and I was sucked in immediately and instead of trying to pull myself out, which without immediate plans, I don't think that I could have anyway, I spent my Saturday with Bill and his friends. It was worth every minute and every hour. There is never a dull moment, with King's books there rarely is. What did I do before I even wrote this review? You guessed it, I bought the final book in the trilogy. I'm forcing myself to wait before I start it because I do need to spend the rest of my Saturday accomplishing something outside of the quicksand. I do, however, recommend that you download this and slip into the quicksand. Put off everything else for a while because sh#t ain't sh#t.
We have mixed feelings about the aptly titled “Finders Keepers”, a sequel of sorts to King’s earlier “Mr. Mercedes” novel. This one opens with a crazed burglar, William Morris, robbing famous author John Rothstein, who has been silent for a couple of decades, of not just cash but dozens of moleskin notebooks containing two unpublished novels and other writings – and then kills him because he doesn’t like the direction Rothstein took his hero (Jimmy Gold) in the last published work. Morris thought a rare bookstore owner was going to sell the notebooks for millions and make them both rich, but the guy refuses, saying to wait a decade or two. In frustration, Morris goes out, gets drunk, rapes and assaults a woman, and spends some 35 years in jail before he finally gets out on parole. (He had previously hidden the cash and notebooks in a trunk he buried near a pond adjoining the back of the property where he lived.)

Then we meet the Saubers who now reside in Morris’ old house; the parents of 13-year-old Peter and his younger sister Tina are struggling in both their marriage and their finances. Peter stumbles upon the buried treasure and parcels out the money to his parents anonymously through the mail with like $500 payments for several years. He meanwhile reads all the author’s writings and loves them and thinks about trying to sell the notebooks to guess who – the same guy who refused Morris. Meanwhile his sister Tina suspects Peter was the source of the monthly cash and tells retired cop Bill Hodges, the guy who solved the case in the prequel. Hodges tries to intervene with Peter before it gets too late.

When Morris gets out of prison and finds his trunk empty, he suspects the book dealer and on we go. The suspense heightens as he discovers it was Peter who took all; and he doesn’t care who he has to kill to get the stuff back.

We think this would have made a great novella – without the follow-up to the earlier book which was somewhat tangential. As is, it was sort of long and drawn out despite a catchy premise and a suspenseful ending. Several readers find deeper meaning in the obsession of first Morris and then Peter with the author and his works, but we didn’t work hard enough to figure out what that might be. We love our good books too, but not to the point of murder and skullduggery!
I love Friends. I have watched the entire series as it aired, on DVD, and streaming on Netflix when it had the rights. There are so many iconic moments that still make me laugh. So I was excited to see a book about the show and I quickly bought and read it.

Ehhh. There are some insights but nothing that great, given that the show ran for so long. And much of what is there is just retelling. So I would have given it three stars.

Unfortunately, the author felt compelled to examine the show, albeit briefly, through a 2018 lense of political correctness and identity issues. She goes on how the show had many "homophobic" and "transphobic" moments, and was incredibly non-diverse, with 6 white people forming the main cast.

Then at the end, the author devotes substantially more pages to a very tangential harassment suit filed by a writers' assistant on the show alleging lots of dirty locker room talk in the writers' room. These pages weren't about the show, the actors, the plots, etc. It was just a chance for the author to tie into #MeToo. A really unnecessary diversion.

I find it a bit surprising that the theme of Friends being an escapist, feel-good, no-drama show is mentioned repeatedly, and that theoretically the readers were fans of the show. Yet the author didn't have the sense to realize that her diversions into political correctness and identity issues ran exactly counter to that whole vibe and that people might find it really alienating. Thus one star only.

I'll Be There for You The One about Friends Kelsey Miller Books Reviews

No matter what anyone tells me, there is no greater television show than friends. We grew up with them. They made us laugh, cry, gasp and every other range of emotion there is. This book is an amazing road trip down the intersects and complications of the wonderful show. There really is so muchto our culture and society that this show really captured, this book is an incredible opportunity to learn and dive more. We were literally just watching a show last night where "the rachel" was applied to a meme. It's how many years later and we're still talking about her hair. It's a great reminder of why it's so easy to connect to this show. HIGHLY reocmmend this book.
A funny, interesting look at the history of Friends. If you’re a huge fan, or just generally interested in behind the scenes and history of shows, you’ll probably enjoy this. The authors voice comes through quite nicely, and it’s very well written.
So I was really excited about this book as excerpts had appeared in articles. And now I see why, the whole book reads like a big newspaper article. This author breezes through the Friends history occasionally touching on moments here or there. But never getting into real detail on things. Some things are never mentioned, like Rachel's pregnancy. Instead she devotes time to society issues like the Friends "homophobia", that stupid Coke a Cola ad campaign or the events around 9/11. This is why reporters are not authors. If you want behind the scene facts about the show you'd learn more reading the IMDB page than you will with this. Don't waste your time, I breezed through the book because there was NOTHING in it I didn't already know.
I’ll be there for you is a deep inside look at the start of the show Friends, and it’s true to its word, I thought I knew the story because I’d read the NBC book about their Thursday night (I forget the title, I think it’s must see tv?). But it turns out there were other stories about Kudrow and other cast members that I hadn’t heard or read about from other sources. I got this as a combo birthday gift for a friend who is really into the show and is moving back to the states, but of course I also had to take a peek!!
I, like most people, have wonderful memories of sitting with my family watching Friends. I bought a lot of the dvds, I would watch it on syndication. Then I would stop. Then it came on Netflix and I watched it. Then I stopped. But this book was so well-written it has me watching it all over again! But it's not just a nostalgic book, it's genuinely an interesting history of Friends, and about that era seen through the eyes of that tv show.
You’d be better off purchasing the “Friends... til the End” authorized coffee table book that came out when the series wrapped.

This book is basically just a re-telling of other articles and stories that have already been written. (The ‘Source Notes’ section is more than 50 pages long).

There are some interesting tid bits and trivia, but again it’s mostly stuff we’ve heard before. The author spends a great deal of time talking about how the show impacted her personally (I don’t really need to know, or care, that you time your gym visits to line up with Friends re-runs).

Nothing new is learned, no great insight is revealed. There aren’t even pictures to accompany the stories. The author is clearly just trying to cash in on Friends nostalgia. She has taken what should have been a blog post and re-packaged it into a book.
This book covered a fascinating subject ... poorly. It's worth reading for the information it contains but the author manages to make one of the best topics available into a snooze-fest. Her writing is flat and uninspiring, making this a book you wade through because you love Friends, not a book you can't put down. She repeats herself constantly and makes all sorts of conclusions, based on her own personal experience viewing Friends, that are neither relevant nor interesting. It's the sort of writing more appropriate to a blog than a book, crowded with unnecessary filler. Such a shame that this topic was hijacked by a mediocre writer instead of getting the sort of talented storyteller the subject deserved. Still, as I mentioned earlier, it's worth reading for the trivia around making Friends - I'd just wait until it goes in the "Free on " pile, or borrow it from your local library.

House of Furies eBook Madeleine Roux Iris Compiet

I was intrigued by House of Furies because I loved Roux's Asylum series and creepy books in general. First I have to say if you're expecting something identical to Asylum you will be disappointed. Whereas her previous books are set in modern times, House of Furies has a much more gothic feel. I also did not find it as lastingly scary as the other books. In this story Louisa is unknowingly living with the devil and when she discovers the truth she has a difficult decision to make. The pace can be a little slow and some chapters I found repetitive but I liked the overall vibe and premise of the book. There is a brief love story I didn't feel particularly invested in, instead I found myself wishing Louisa developed more of a relationship with Mr. Morningside himself. I'm willing the give the second book a chance to see how the story develops from here.

House of Furies eBook Madeleine Roux Iris Compiet Reviews

I liked the book but i got a little confused
I love this series! Brilliantly written, excellent world building and spooky.
Well written, and I enjoyed the story line a lot. Looking forward to book 2.
This Book is engrossing, imaginative and a true page turner. You will not put it down.
if you enjoy Neil Gaiman or anything fantastic, this book is for you.
I've always enjoyed Roux's writing but I think she's honestly outdone herself with this one. This story takes place in a boarding house full of characters with... interesting abilities and makes the reader question the line between right and wrong. Can't wait to pick up the next book in the series!
I found this novel to be a realistic take on its subject matter. I like how the characters weren’t over embellished from the beginning. Each passing chapter you learn more and more about each of them. If you’re looking for a dark, moody read, get this book!
House of furies by Madeleine Roux tells the story of Louisa, a fortune teller, who is given a gold coin by an older woman and offered a job at Coldthistle House. There’s more to the old woman than Louisa realizes and she’s not sure what to think of her. On their way to Coldthistle House, the wagon wheel breaks and a passing wagon stops to help them. These travelers are on their way to Coldthistle House too. Once Louisa finally reaches their destination, she finds out more than she bargained for and discovers that she will supposedly never leave. The art on the cover and introductions of the chapters are beautifully spooky and appropriate for the story. With interesting relationships and creepiness, I read this book nonstop. 4 Stars!

The Language of Thorns Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic Leigh Bardugo Sara Kipin Books

I started this and finished it in one night and I took all night long because I had to look at the gorgeous artwork. I have found love. These tales from lands in the Grishaverse have made me even more of a Leigh Bardugo fan of that is even possible. The last story When Water Sang Fire blew me away! I love mermaids and I just want to live in the last page. If I could make my home anywhere it would be there honestly, if you have the book just go look at the last page and you’ll understand. There were so many elements to these stories, fantasy, fairy tales, heartbreak, and so much love that I got attached to all of the characters in all of the stories. Of my favorite the first story Ayama and the Thorn Wood, The Solider Prince, and the last one I’ve already mentioned are probably my favorite but all are worth the read, and then a reread. I’ll make it my bedtime book and just keep reading them before bed each night to have amazing dreams!

The Language of Thorns Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic Leigh Bardugo Sara Kipin Books Reviews

This is a beautiful book with vivid stories from the wonderful Grisha world. Even if you have not read the Grisha Trilogy or the Six of Crows Duology, if you like fairy tails rewritten and short stories this is a wonderful collection of 6 stories. My favorite is the story of Ursula before she became evil. Then meshing of the Nutcracker and the Velveteen Rabbit is really good too. Read and see if you can spot all the old stories in the new ones here!
This collection was every bit as gorgeous as I had hoped it would be--if not more. I love how unique the stories are while also bearing strong influences and taking on familiar forms of other classic fairy tales. Bardugo truly proves her creative and accomplished writing skills in this collection, weaving together lyrical words with jaw-dropped stories and themes. These stories contain beautiful messages and dismantle on so many fairy tale tropes in order to create new ones by maintain the classic ideas but warping them into something rather different.

The illustrations in this book are also so beautiful and add so very much to this entire story. I love how each story alternated with the blue and red color scheme, and I particularly loved how the border of each story developed as the story continued. That entire concept was a beautiful, creative idea that worked out wonderfully.

And now I'd like to include a brief word on each story

Ayama and the Thorn Wood - ★★★★ I found this to be a perfect story to start the collection off with. There were some incredibly classic elements that made it feel very classic, while also embodying an wholly new and unique story at the same time. I loved the storytelling element added to this story and felt that the entire thing was quite lovely. It became slightly repetitive towards the end, which I understand is common in these types of stories, but that took away some of my enjoyment.

The Too-Clever Fox - ★★★★ I really enjoyed this story, although I found it slightly predictable at times. This one felt particularly classic and familiar, but I loved the various twists Bardugo weaved into it. I really enjoyed reading about all of the different animals and there roles, but the clever fox, of course, was my favorite. "The Too-Clever Fox" gets a little darker than the first story, but it still weaves in an interesting little fable message.

The Witch of Duva - ★★★★★ I loved this one! The entire concept and the dark atmosphere that permeated the entire story in such a wonderful manner were amazing, and I really think Bardugo crafted this one perfectly. The witch was a fascinating character, and i loved how somewhat disturbing and odd this story became as it went on.

Little Knife - ★★★★★ "Little Knife" is brilliant. This is a story about a girl named Yuva who is so jaw-droppingly beautiful that she literally has to go around with a veil over her so that people can control themselves when she is around. This is another one that I really loved. It was such a classic and timeless tale, and one that I really enjoyed.

The Soldier Prince - ★★★ This was probably my least favorite content-wise. I loved the illustrations and border decorations on this story, but the story itself fell somewhat flat for me. This is a take on the Nutcracker, and although I enjoyed that aspect, I felt a little lost and uninterested in many parts o this story. the plot idea was interesting, but the execution felt lackluster.

When Water Sang Fire- ★★★★ I completely understand why this was chosen as the last story of the book, as it leaves an incredibly strong message. This is a Little Mermaid-inspired tale that is all about sacrifice, ambition, and acceptance. I don't want to go into any detail on this one because it is wonderful to discover on your own.

Overall, I've given The Language of Thorns five stars! I can definitely see myself re-reading these tales and even reading them to others.
pooled ink Reviews

I absolutely loved reading these tales and oh my, the cover (both the dust jacket and what’s beneath) is utterly gorgeous! But not only is the outside beautiful but the inside as well! The gradual progression of the drawings bordering each page of a story is brilliant and the illustrations are all so lovely!

Each story is told in a voice I could easily hear standing alongside those of the famous Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen. And similarly these tales are much darker and more grisly than what can be found on the Disney classics shelves. What I really enjoyed I think was how Bardugo took inspiration from the world she’s crafted in her books and inspiration from fairytales handed down in our own world and merged the two, instilling vaguely familiar tales with a much fuller story and deeper message. As beloved as fairytales are one must admit that they are often a bit nonsensical, predictable, and seem to only skim the surface. These tales however are short but well developed and thought out, brimming with a relatable authenticity that one can either identify with or at least grasp its lessons.

If you’re a fan of fairytales, folktales, wives tales, or the Grishaverse, then I definitely recommend you grab a copy of this beautiful book!

**Read my FULL review on my Wordpress site Pooled Ink
First, I love this author and her creativity and style of writing. I read Six of Crows Series and her Grisha Series in probably 2 weeks, procrastinating lots of other things I should have been doing as I couldn't put the books down. I would give those books 5 stars. For me, these stories were a little too dark and gruesome and not as creative. It could be I Iike a happy or hopeful ending and a couple of these dark stories just left me with a creepy feeling. I like escapism in reading, but don't want to think about things like pediihelia or a serial murderer. Those are the books I try to stay away from. I see enough of that on the news.

A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl Jean Thompson 9781501194368 Books

Can the actions of one generation affect the lives of succeeding ones? Should the secrets of parents and grandparents - seemingly so important to them - be exposed by the third generation? And what damage - or help - occurs by exposing them? Author Jean Thompson has written a brilliant book, "A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl", about three generations of a family in a mid-western college town and the actions and secrets that bind them together.

Thompson's story centers on the three generations of women. Evelyn, the grandmother, is a disappointed wife and mother, who always seems to be searching for...something, some place, or somebody else in her life. She married a much older academician and her own hopes of a brilliant teaching career are rather stifled by motherhood and wifehood. She gives birth to a son and a daughter, and that daughter, Laura, repeats her mother's life by also marrying a difficult man and having a daughter and son. Laura's daughter, Grace, is a mid-20's college graduate who is sort of drifting through life. Grace is drifting, as is her younger brother, Michael, who, in addition, is saddled with an addiction to drugs. Oh, and did I mention that their father, Gabe, is an alcoholic? Pretty grim family, I think most readers would say.

But they're not "grim", in Jean Thompson's able hands. She gives so much nuance to her six main characters that all are seen as individuals who you might know...or even be a member of your own family. Thompson doesn't feel sorry for her characters, so the reader doesn't. Thompson's book is not action-packed. Oh, people die but the others mourn and move on, often accompanied by the secrets these deaths have exposed. It's what the family members do with those secrets that makes Jean Thompson's book such a winner.

A Cloud in the Shape of a Girl Jean Thompson 9781501194368 Books Reviews

For those who aren’t familiar with Jean Thompson, a word of warning—her books do not have page-turning action or swiftly moving plots (at least the ones I’ve read). Instead, like this one, her novels are character-based, and her style is often meditative. When something dramatic happens, it isn’t like a bomb going off, but rather like the bottom fell out. She does not pander to boilerplate blockbusters, or pad her story with popular platitudes. Thompson’s narrative is subtle, intelligent, with themes that compel you to examine our culture.

Is agency governed by choice or by decree? Does history determine your future? As women, are we bound to roles passed down by our mothers? How can we fix our lives when mired in a damaged, dysfunctional family? In this story of three generations of women, spanning over 80 years, the questions of legacy and expectations—both your own and your parents’—are addressed.

Three generations of Wise women, in a small midwestern town, with their various ambitions and stifled longings, are keenly portrayed in this story. Evelyn, well educated, taught college during WW II, taking advantage of the vacancies when men went off to war. She was an unconventional thinker and assertive achiever who married late and had children even later. She capitulated to choices against her nature, and paid for it with growing resentment and ill-disposed mothering. Evelyn lived in the shadow of her husband—the conduct of the good wife, while she was devoured by custom and housework.

Evelyn’s daughter, Laura, was unlike her mother; she was obliging and pliable and sought love and marriage. Eventually, she settled for an unruly and moody alcoholic, and took a backseat to his will. Her minor career offered meager satisfaction, and she tried to be the glue in her family. Laura coddled her self-destructive son and took her daughter, Grace, for granted; she expected Grace to be accommodating to the men in the family. Now in her twenties, Grace wants more for herself, but she’s stuck in a matrilineal legacy. She carries her burden with dread, and is caught in a battle of wills.

The pace moves gently as the characters deepen and troubles increase, but there’s an urgency growling subtly beneath the narrative. It’s a pull and push, a tug of war, a war of the women in the quagmire of history.

“And yet history shifted underneath your feet…The present was a dizzy perch that every so often began to spin and slide…You held onto your life with both hands, you told yourself to pay attention to this moment, the here and now. But one minute passed into the next, and at some point you looked back and everything was over and people called it history.”
But what a tragedy...
Good read but a little too much angst.
Jean Thompson’s novel A CLOUD IN THE SHAPE OF A GIRL traces the history of three generations of women in a small Midwestern college town, each struggling to find themselves. Each taking similar paths.

Grandmother, mother, and daughter are motivated all right. Perhaps they are intimidated by their belief that society is holding them back. Or is it their family? Their foremothers? What are they sacrificing for the sake of happiness? Regardless of what is holding them back, their desire is palpable.

Are the women doomed to repeat the history they haven’t learned? Thompson gives us much to contemplate in the profiles of Evelyn, Laura and young Grace.

When The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing Daniel H Pink 9780735210622 Books

4.5★s
When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing is the fourth book by bestselling American author, Daniel H. Pink. If we’re making an important life decision, what we decide obviously requires careful consideration. But what about when we decide? Could the time of day that we make a decision be significant? Could the time of day affect how well we learn or do our work? Does it really matter when we have that first cup of coffee? According to Dan Pink, it definitely does.

In this intriguing book, Pink examines the importance of good and bad timing. He begins by explaining how our individual chronotype (easily established) determines both our mood and our ability to perform at any given time of the day: how it affects our professional and our ethical judgements, as well as our physical function.

But he doesn’t just pontificate on the best time to do something for future success and happiness. He acknowledges that not everyone can control their work environment or the financial climate as they enter the job market. Pink also gives practical suggestions for dealing with less than ideal conditions, as well as hints and tips to improve everyday life.

Pink supports his points with data and simple, clear graphs. The depth of his research is apparent in every paragraph, and supported by his extremely comprehensive (26-page) notes section detailing references for each chapter. As well as six suggestions for further reading, Pink includes an 8-page index. But the most useful thing about this book is his Time Hacker’s Handbook: salient points from each section are condensed into summaries full of hints and tips and practical exercises that appear after each of the first six chapters.

Pink explains in detail: why having a coffee before a power nap makes sense; why combining a lunch break with an education session at 1pm (as some teaching hospitals do with their Grand Rounds) is counterproductive (ditto 8am lectures for University students); when the worst time to be a hospital patient is, and why; and the reason some people have the so-called “mid-life crisis”.

He looks at the effects of starting one’s career during a depressed jobs-market; why a mid-point (in a project, in a career, in a life) can cause a slump or a spark; how to overcome a bad start; when to quit your job; when to get married; when to exercise; the importance of breaks; and much, much more. Illustrating his points are choirs and rowing teams and basketballers and dubbawalas delivering tiffin tins and Hanukkah candles and the captain of the Lusitania.

Pink’s fourth book should be compulsory reading for bosses, educators, and schedulers, for policymakers, company executives, and performers, but there is plenty in this fascinating book that the average person will find applicable to their lives. This is a quick read that rewards time spent with some excellent insights. Recommended!

When The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing Daniel H Pink 9780735210622 Books Reviews

I've read all of Pink's books, starting with Free Agent Nation back in 2002 when I launched my own business. He has a gift of taking boatloads of facts, research and scientific experiments and making it all readable and applicable for the common man. And that is what he has again delivered in When. The cited research can at times come at you fast and furious, as if it's on a pre-Christmas distribution center conveyor belt. But if you're patient, he will put eventually put a bow on it and tell you what it means for YOU. And to that note, I'm already using the When Daily Planner to prioritize my Peak, Trough and Recovery periods of the day. With Pink's books you will always learn something useful about humans at work and how you can personally benefit from the mounds of research on the topic.

Now my only question is...why was I just now taking time from my highly productive "Recovery" portion of the day to write a book review on ? Oh well, I guess I still have work to do in successfully implementing of all these great ideas!
I thought I was good at time management. And then I read Dan's new book. Now I realize that I knew nothing about the science of timing or true productivity. As with all Dan Pink books, When, is well written, well researched, and completely eye-opening. I can't wait to start applying the principles of When into my life and work. When should you buy this book? Now! It really is a game changer!
With a group of sixth graders today I read aloud the introduction to WHEN about Captain Turner's Decision. I asked the students to close their eyes and create pictures in their heads about the sinking of the ship the Lusitania. I read the few pages aloud, ok with some drama Daniel Pink would have been proud of! I did this as part of a lesson about comparing and contrasting the sinking of the Titanic to the Lusitania. Before we could get to my lesson objective the students wanted to know more about WHEN and the timing of things. They peppered me with questions that I don't have answers to, YET! I can't wait to read more of WHEN and share it with students and educators everywhere! #AwesomeDay
I expect that Pink will always write a worthwhile book, so I pre-ordered it, expecting a few good tidbits and affirmations of what I recommend on my site and in my book Life Value Productivity.
As he digs in deep(er) than almost all of us would never do (including many “good” writers), he comes up with insights that are counter to what we might think (or assume, using logic, but without verified facts!).
Though the most known is the day time (ultradian rhythm) which I also write about, he points out how this “flips” around to be a relative opposite for “night owls”, who do their recovery in the morning (though it is somewhat known, it is largely misunderstood and misapplied) - which is very, very, very significant for that 20% of so of the population who fall into that category.
Honoring one’s natural rhythm by doing the “right things at the right time” during the day is ONE OF THE VERY BIGGEST EFFECTORS OF EFFECTIVENESS and productivity and on one’s life in general, including one’s happiness.
The book is a “nice read”, but I would recommend that you first read the highly useful, super productive “guidebook” at the end of each chapter to see what to actually do - and then go back and read the rest more at your leisure.
Implement at least the first two chapter guidebooks right away, right into your life NOW (take no more than a week!). I also recommend you do the timing trick that he recommends for weight loss, where you can comfortably eat fewer calories...
These strategies are mostly the “just do this exact (easy) thing, and you WILL get ‘x’ desired result.” NOT JUST MAYBE...
Implement these 100%, strictly, into your life and schedule and I GUARANTEE your life will be massively improved!
Keith D. Editing!!! Missing words, extra words, wrong words used!! Character descriptions weren't consistent either. The mistakes were very easy to spot, no excuses on not correcting them.
Hadley, I'm very partial to that name since it's my maiden name. She let the bullying define her entire life, which unless you've lived it, I doubt any of us can understand why.
Wrigley, I am questioned why he pursued Hadley. He basically ignored her for years so why now? Spoilers follow so don't continue if you haven't read it...
What he said to Livi was absolute crap! And Hadley excepted a weak apology for it. While he said he hadn't been with Livi while they were apart, what about other girls? I don't know that I buy that a guy who was very active sexually didn't move on after not having had sex with Hadley.
Now, a silly rant, kids don't move out of their dorms at winter break. They haven't been in school for 5 months at Thanksgiving break either.
Bottom line, the last two books in this series were a long time coming, and deeply disappointing.

Shutout The Core Four Book 4 edition by Stacy Borel Romance eBooks Reviews

The first book in this series was amazing. I loved everything about it, but they just got progressively worse. This whole book is just in Hadley's head. There is little interaction with anyone else.
This story seemed a lot more young teen romance than adult story, and didn't really seem to fit the culture or style of the other 3 books. Having said that I would still read the series again, as overall it was awesome.
This one was a little more 'cutesy' than passionate, and there were more sloppy editing errors than in previous books. I do think if an author is going to charge more than a dollar or two for a book, then those types of things should be sorted out.
Overall a very simple, quick and easy read.
Shutout was the fourth and final book in the Core Four series by Stacy Borel.

Wrigley Brooks was the youngest Brooks brother, gorgeous, fun, outgoing and was attending LSU on a baseball scholarship.

Hadley Marten was quiet, shy and socially awkward. She selected LSU so she could have a fresh start and a new beginning, putting the bullying and meanness of high school behind her.

Shutout was told in a singular POV, Hadley's. Wrigley and Hadley were both from the same small town in GA. They lived a few doors down from each other growing up but weren't necessarily friends. Wrigley was popular and Hadley was not. Once they were at LSU, Wrigley pursued Hadley hard; however, Hadley wanted nothing to do with him and kept pushing him away. Their relationship building and overcoming Hadley's baggage was the sole focus of the story.

I was torn over Hadley. I understood her trust issues from high school - she obviously was bullied. But once Wrigley showed genuine interest and they were dating awhile, I didn't get her continued whining. I wanted to see her confidence build but we never really got to see that progression and therefore, I was craving more.

I enjoyed the premise of the story; however, there were numerous editing errors, which were distracting. Otherwise, I enjoyed Borel's style.

This should conclude the Core Four series. I enjoyed all four siblings, the foundation of each storyline, and the family ties that were consistent throughout each book. A potential spinoff could include Aurora/Bishop, Matt, and Chris. I look forward to seeing what comes next from Borel.
I just demolished this book in just a couple hours. I think the best part about Stacey Borel's book is the realistic vibe she puts out. This could have been my friends in college which made me love this even more (not the epilogue of course but you know what I mean)

Wrigley and Hadley are the icing on the cake to this series. The sweetest book out of the 4 brothers with the innocence of being in college made this my favorite book. I enjoyed following along the Brooks family as they fell in love and I'm sad to see them go. ( I would like to point out that we could always have one more shot at Bree...hint hint Stacey!)
I so wanted to love this book because I have been with this series since the beginning. First off there are so many extra words that don't belong as well as many typos. It seems that this story was rushed and we don't see much in way of character development. I just feel we could have learned more about their relationship. Each scene seemed like it was just thrown in to just finish the series. I know the author is working on something else at the moment so maybe this is the reason she rushed through Wrigley's story. You don't see much from her other characters as well from this series and we love all of them. Don't get me wrong it was a good concept but it just needed that little bit extra to be a great story. it just seems like they go from being friends to boyfriend and girlfriend without all the details that we are used to from this Author. I still love Stacy Borel and will continue to read her books
In the future as long as I feel like she won't create a story just to throw away the last in the series to start something new. We have been invested these past couple of years with these characters and I wanted to be excited but I was left disappointed.
I've waited and waited for this book in this series and it was a total let down! The whole book felt rushed, the characters had no development and the epilogue was horrible! I wish we could've had a more in depth story. The first book was by far the best, all the others didn't even come close. Would love a rewrite!
Loved the first two in the series, number 3 was good, but number 4 missed the mark for me. I didn't like Hadley at all -I get that she's only 18 and immature, but I really did not find any redeeming qualities. I could not understand what Wrigley would've seen in her and been attracted to -she kept to herself and basically judged everyone around her for years following a series of elementary school bullying episodes. Also needed a better proof read -used "IUD" in a sentance that was obviously meant to be "IED" -that was a biggy that obviously stuck with me. It might've been better if I had liked Hadley at least a little bit, but because she just annoyed me the entire story, I could not enjoy this one.

Gabriel Hope #1 Rhyn Eternal Volume 1 Lizzy Ford 9781623780678 Books

First, I would really recommend reading Lizzy Ford's Rhyn trilogy before reading this book.. There are many references to previous story lines that can be confusing to readers unfamiliar with the characters.
Gabriel is the epitome of the unattainable man, tall, beautiful, aloof. Death. After we leave Rhyn and Kate; and find Gabriel, Rhyn's best friend and the savior of Kate, we find the Underworld in chaos. Gabriel, the newly appointed deity of Death is struggling with the mess his ex-girlfriend, past-death, has left him..a new job with no instruction manual.
Dodging Fate, a one night stand that turns into a forever mating, demon hunting, traitor ex lovers; this story is beyond entertaining. The love that Death unwittingly and unwillingly feels for the sweet Deidre, who is not all that she seems, is heart warming. I love Gabriel, he enchanted me from the moment I first read about him in the Rhyn Trilogy, his heart is as big as the ocean and as shattered as broken glass. Gabriel's Hope is a much deserved story for this character. Lizzy Ford writes characters who we love to love and love to hate and this story is full of both all the way to the end. I will say that I wish it was a longer story, I didn't want it to end; but Ms. Ford is excellent at cliffhangers and this one is a doozy. The sequel is one I highly anticipate reading.

Gabriel Hope #1 Rhyn Eternal Volume 1 Lizzy Ford 9781623780678 Books Reviews

I have read books by Lizzy Ford before and I can tell you that she is amazing! She knows how to capture her audience with each word that she writes and let me tell you Gabriel’s Hope is no different.

We start out with Deidre who is very sick with a tumor in the doctor’s office, where Dr. Wynn lets her know that she has always been more than just a patient to him but there is the matter of her boyfriend Logan, she lets Dr. Wynn know that she is headed down the coast and will be back after the weekend after she has broken up with Logan she will let him know about the dinner Dr. Wynn wants to take her to. However things don’t always go as planned. Deidre who just happens to be past-death who left the immortal world to become mortal has made several not so good deals with immortals who just aren’t willing to let the past go, they demand payment and will stop at nothing to get it.

Enter Fate, handsome (in my mind’s eye) who wants to know what is going to happen to Deidre so he summons Dr. Wynn who just happens to be formerly dead-dead. It seems that past-death made a deal with him and he wants to know about her wellbeing as a mortal, it just seems that there are several others who want to know about the patient as well. However Fate is more than willing to remind the Dr. that he is close to messing with the future but won’t give any pointers on what the good doctor should do, but Fate warns Dr. Wynn that her destiny lies with Death.
Enter Death, Gabriel, who can’t figure out why mortals that are on the list to be collected are not the ones that his assassin’s keep coming back with, he needs to figure out what is going on and fast, so as he tries to salvage what is left of the underworld he cancels all remaining contracts until this situation can be fixed. Enter Rhyn head of the Council That Was Seven, who seemed to be in a matchmaking mood when he tells Gabriel that the council has found his mate the one that he can’t let any harm come to no matter what.

When Deidre and Gabriel meet for the first time the attraction to one another is not something that can easily be ignored no matter how much Gabriel wants to he can’t, so when demons try to kill Deidre Gabriel must step in and save her even if it is against his wish. For those of you who want a spicy romance with grab the arm chair drama and roller coasters then this is the book for you! I can’t wait to read more from Lizzy Ford and I will be on the lookout for more.
Okay so, I loved how Gabriel's Hope seemed to run straight off from Rhyn's Redemption, No "One year later" etc.
At first this was a little hard to determine as the reader is thrown straight into Deidre's Life but it becomes apparent when Gabriel starts talking about everything that has/is going wrong in the underworld.
I loved the characters, Lizzy hasn't changed them much even though their situations have changed, she only begins to change the character after she explains the basis of change. The characters all say that Deidre is the complete opposite to past-death however I see alot of similarities, I also think past-death wasn't a complete b***h coming from the end of Rhyn's Redemption.
There were so many laugh at loud moments in this book for me, the one liners coming from all the characters are classic!and I especially had a giggle when Gabe found out who Deidre was!
The story line was easy to follow for me, but I believe it would be a bit difficult for someone who had not read the Rhyn Trilogy, and the suspense was great with the twists and turns and not having all the cards played and once.
I would suggest a probable 16+ audience for this because of language and situations, but apart from that a very enjoyable read and as always I cant wait for the next one ) Keep up the great work Lizzy )
I bought this book on .
Gabriel's Hope by Lizzy Ford
WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!! This is the first book read by this author and I'm literally blown away. Feeling speechless and on edge from the fabulous ending that leaves you hanging for the next book!!! I am dying to know what is going to happen to Deidre!!!! I am definitely reading the other books that this author has put out. This book has become one of my favorites and looking forward to re-reading it again. I have fallen in love with the characters, especially Gabriel (who wouldn't) and Deidre. Gabriel embodies the dark mysterious handsome stranger to a T!!! Deidre is our independent and stubborn damsel trying her best to not rely on anyone but herself. The character's show so much passion and emotion that it is hard not to embrace them. There are many deals, betrayels, twists, and OMG moments. This is a have to -want to read!!! Story is amazing!!

Gabriel is the new DEATH and the past-Death dumped a big pile of crap on him before she left. Now Gabriel has to fix the underworld and doing so will help him become a better deity. One evening on a beach, Gabriel gets his world knocked out from under him. Will he rise up and meet the challenge or will he cower in the shadows? I give this book and amazing 5 star review!!!
(historical spoilers below)

I always hate to admit it, but I will give up on a book about halfway through if it doesn't hold my attention. I thought about it with this one about 1/3 of the way through, but continued on and I'm glad I did. The second half of the book races along and not getting to the end was unthinkable.

The writing throughout is excellent, but I think I was at a bit of a disadvantage, knowing the stories of both Anastasia Romanov and Anna Anderson extremely well. I went into the book skeptical, and perhaps that's what the author intended. By the end, I was actually saddened by the historical outcome, even though I know better.

The time distortions in the story do start out as confusing, I'll admit. There were quite a few times where I had to scroll back to double check what year and approximate date I had just read. But they begin to make sense the further you read, and they become a natural part of the narrative.

If you're unfamiliar with the Romanov's history, this is a great starting point. If you are familiar with their history, especially Anastasia's, you'll find this book gives her a new voice and it's well worth a listen.

I Was Anastasia Ariel Lawhon Ariel Lawhon and Jane Collingwood Sian Thomas 9780525496229 Books Reviews

This was my first book to read by Ariel Lawhon. I also had never read anything about the Romanov family. This was a book I could hardly put down but reading with my fingers over my eyes and as to the horror the Ramanov family went through. I would recommend this book highly!
Sometimes it is hard to read a book when without a doubt you know that the ending will not be to your liking. Historical fiction which tells a story such as this one which is intricately woven is a joy to read. A conundrum? Maybe so, but trust me this a book that will be enjoyed by lovers of historical fiction. Thanks for a great read!
"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." -Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Most people know the story of the execution/assassination of Tsar Nicholas II and the rest of the Romanov family in Elakterinburg, Russia at the hands of the Bolsheviks following the Russian revolution. Most have also heard of the woman (Anna Anderson) who claimed for years to be Anastasia Romanov and that she survived the brutal attack that claimed the lives of her family and servants. This is a clever telling of that story. The question about what whether Anastasia Romanov survived the firing squad in the basement has fascinated people for decades. Lack of DNA testing and location of a grave/burial site helped many who stepped forward to claim that she was the sole survivor. Of course, through the passing of time, DNA testing has been conducted and grave site excavations have given a clear answer.

But as the saying goes...it's not the destination, it's the journey. Lawhon takes the reader on a unique journey using two story lines. While reading this book, readers will either enjoy or become annoyed by the storytelling. While Anastasia Romanov's story is told chronologically, the story of Anna Anderson is told in reverse. In Author's note, Ariel Lawhon states that the movie "Memento" is a favorite of hers. This style of writing also reminded me of the book "All the missing girls" which was also told in reverse.

I found that I rather liked how she told her story. The storytelling was unique, granted, it did take me a couple of chapters to wrap my head around it. Thankfully, the chapters are labeled with the time you are reading. That is a big help! There is a lot of historical detail in this book. It is evident that the Author did a great deal of research prior to the writing of this book. History buffs may detect that Lawhon blended several characters into one (i.e. had one character be a blending of 2 real life guards of the Romanov's) in order to help the reader keep track of events and not be weighed down by too many characters.

It is hard to say too much without giving away spoilers, but this work of historical fiction was very good. I really appreciated how she blended historical facts with fiction. If you do not know the entire history about the Romanov's family's fall from grace and the events leading up to their execution, it is laid out for you here.

I highly recommend reading the Author's note at the end. I think this is essential. She details her research, why she blended characters, her inspiration for the reverse story telling and what lead her to write this book. I was actually deciding between a 3.5 and a 4 star rating, and then I read the Author's note and that pushed the book to a 4 star rating for me.

I love when books cause me to think, feel and also to learn. I did learn some facts while reading this book and I found I often wanted to put the book down and think about what I had just read. Mainly because things in this book really happened. Sitting and thinking about the horrible treatment of this family (especially the girls) and what they endured -living in constant fear and dread, I can't even imagine.

Again, interesting story-telling and a compelling read.

Thank you to Doubleday books and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced readers copy of this book.
Very disappointing. Written largely in the backward style of "Memento" where every chapter is earlier than the one before it, which makes it very difficult to follow with each chapter being made pointless with the next, earlier, chapter. But my biggest complaint is the author herself gloating at the end of the book for making an idiot of you for reading the book in the first place (suggestion read the "I Told You So" note at the end, first). This author clearly has an ego problem and this is the last book of hers I will ever read. The story is great, she should have just told it and left it at that, and not played condescending games with the readers at the end.
Just a word to the wise, this book was written in a backward timeline telling Anna’s story and forward timeline telling Anastasia’s story. The truth lies in the middle, which’s the end of the book. I wasn’t sure if that was going to annoy me enough to stop reading. It wasn’t. Wow, what a great Book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and had a hard time putting it down. Well written and characters well developed. Highly recommend.

Loving Lachlyn Ashland Pride Two edition by RE Butler Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

I must say this is a great addition to the series R. E. has done it again. The right amount of romance, sex, action and anticipation of what is next to come. This one presented the mountain lion clan in a different light not their normal loving thoughtful selves (no spoilers here). I cannot wait until this series continues. I'm waiting somewhat impatiently for the next in the series. Just like this one it will not disappoint.
Rereading, remembering to review. I love this series and its tie ins. Alek feel's he is destined to be alone. He sees what true mates have and won't settle for less. Lachlyn is a bear who is unable to shift. Jericho is a clan enforcer and son of the bear king and has loved Lachlyn since childhood. Jericho and Lachlyn go on the run after his father tries to !I'll her, ending up with her family in Indiana. When Lachlyn meets Alek, she has found her other mate. A fun and steamy love story.
Love, love, love Ms. Butler's books. I really like the multiple mates situations, this one was a little off kilter for me, though. It was like something didn't quite fit between Jericho and Alek. The other males seem to have a 'brother' bond that never felt like it quite made it there for these two. But it didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the wonderful world, love, intrigue and characters painted by Ms. Butler. Nice set up for the next book, even if we can see it a mile away...
I have been anxiously awaiting this book. It did not disappoint!

Two were bears leave their den after Jericho's dad tries to kill Lachlyn because she is not able to shift. They escape and head to Ashland where her Uncle lives. When they arrive they meet Lachlyn's other mate and that causes Jericho and Lachlyn's mating senses to kick in. Alek has been afraid he would never find his mate and would always be almost alone. Alek and Jericho try to keep their mate safe and out of the hands of Jer's psycho dad.

It is a sweet story that had a couple of funny lines in it. Cannot wait for the next one.
I love R.E. Butler and her Ashland Pride. If her books are available to preorder I do it as soon as I can. If you like multiple pairings this series is for you. What I like the most about R.E. Butler's series even though they all have their villains it doesn't take up the whole book. She is one of my very favorite authors and I will always purchase whatever she puts out. Keep them coming RE, looking forward to Marking Melody.
A great follow up to Seducing Samantha.
Loving Lachlyn continues the journey of the lion pride in Ashland finding their true mates.
Alek as we know is a mountain lion and he is starting to feel like he is never gonna find his mate and forever be alone.
Jericho and Lachlyn are bear shifters and have known each other since grade school. They have loved each other for as long as they have known each other but never mated officially because something was missing.
Who knew what a birthday dinner would bring together other than friends and family?
Action, drama, suspense, one psychotic bear king who will stop at nothing to keep his son, laughter, romance and hot yummy love scenes.
Loved Alek finding his mate and finally Jericho and Lachlyn have found what was missing. Also loved the intro to the next story in the series. I am really looking forward to that.
This book may be the 2nd book in the Ashland Pride series but it can easily be read as a stand alone book....although why would you want to deny yourself the chance to read any R.E book?
I love shifter books and this one didn't disappoint! Strong independent heroine, and not one but two amazingly sexy, caring males! This is a wonderfully well written story that gives us a chance to escape into a world of romance and excitement but also has some very hot steamy scenes between Lachlyn and her men-Alex the serious, thoughtful lion & Jericho the rugged, powerful bear. Both men have a deep desire to give all they have to protect and provide for the woman they love.......who wouldn't want that? The story is action-packed with several evil characters that challenge our heroes and their lovely lady but the best part is the beautiful romance that keeps me coming back for more. And this one doesn't fail to deliver. Good job Ms Butler!

Unzipped Lauren Blakely 9781732575509 Books

I am an enormous Lauren Blakely fan, and when I read the synopsis for this book, my interest was instantly sparked. I’m a lover of all things romance, especially romantic comedies, whether they be in book form or on film. I love everything about them from the meet-cutes to the sweet and sometimes cheesy way the couples fall in love to the over-the-top grand gestures and everything in between. So when I realized this book kicks off with a play on what is probably the grandest of the grand gestures on film – the Dobler/boombox scene from Say Anything – I was sold.

Blakely gives readers a hot nerd hero in roller coaster designer, Kyler. He was so endearing, so adorable in his cluelessness—I adored him instantly. His mangled attempt at the Dobler-inspired boombox moment was a hot, hot mess, but he owned it and stole my heart in the process. Finley, the girl next door to the girl of Kyler’s dreams, is a comedy writer of her own TV show on the verge of being cancelled. She is in desperate need of inspiration when the poorly singing, bumbling Kyler is dropped right on her lawn. After hearing his plan win his former girlfriend’s heart back, she knows she needs to help this guy.

Finley and Kyler were both so quirky and very different, but I think that’s what drew them to each other. They naturally challenged each other, and I think that was what initially drew them to each other and sparked the attraction between them. Their flirty banter was quick and hilarious, and despite their differences, this couple had fantastic chemistry. Finley wasn’t exactly keen to take another spin on the “I’m still in love with my ex” rollercoaster ride that is written all over Kyler, but she does want the inspiration he’s giving her—as long as it doesn’t inspire anything other than plot ideas. It doesn’t take Kyler long to realize that he’s chasing the wrong girl, though, and he flips his focus on Finley. I loved all of his movie-quoting, and his whole sweet and seductive routine was utterly swoon-worthy.

Unzipped by Lauren Blakely was lighthearted, sexy and amusing, and it was exactly what I was looking to read when I started it. With Blakely’s clever writing and a wholly entertaining storyline, Unzipped was a witty, fun and charming romance that kept me smiling the whole way through. Five smooches from me!

Unzipped Lauren Blakely 9781732575509 Books Reviews

was pulled in right from the prologue. I still have such a fondness for 80's movies and pop culture so this book really spoke to me. It's fun, quirky, and full of romantic tropes.

He is an an intelligent man with a unique and interesting career. He is a planner and feels he is ready for love and commitment. But he is also a bit of a clueless male who has been surrounded by brothers who also give not so great advice. So he sets off on an adventure to revisit the girl he last felt strongly for...his college girlfriend.

She is a television comedy writer and in need of some fast inspiration for her series. She was not expecting this strange man to show up in her life, but he certainly helps inspire her. She is chatty, funny, quirky, and curious. She loves a good story and he is full of them.

When they team up to work on their separate goals, they develop a fun rapport and mutual support system, and can quote with the best of them. But the closer they get, the more confusing it gets. As they are helping each other, they are starting to have to avoid and deny some things that might be changing. They've both got fears and insecurities from their pasts that affect how they see relationships.

But sometimes life flips the script. These two are teaching each other. They are growing and changing. They are learning from their mistakes, building self worth, and trying to be better people. But they are dancing around attraction and temptation, while having fun, sharing common interests, and pushing each other's buttons. Reality can slap you in the face when you least expect it. And sometimes plans do not always go as...planned.

These two are totally adorkable! Hanging with them was totally fun! They are quirky and imperfectly perfect together. I loved their adventures, their humor, and banter. And anyone who loves 80's movies knows how important grand gestures are and that you have to get it just right. I enjoyed the tropes and plot ideas and how they were integrated into a new unexpected rom com. It made me happy and giddy and I adored it.
Tom (aka Kyler), has grown up since his college days when the love of his life broke up with him. Now that he is a successful business man, he decides to make the grand gesture, to get the girl back. Off he goes to her home, carrying a boom box to play her favorite song outside her bedroom window. Classic right! The problem with this is, first of all the boom box malfunctions, so he ends up singing the song. Then the wrong girl appears at the window. Come to find out his ex doesn’t live there anymore. The good news is that Finley, the girl at the window, offers to help him to make the grand gesture.
Finley is a writer for a comedy show, that may soon be on the chopping block. When this crazy guy shows up with a boom box outside her window, Finley runs outside to meet him. All she’s thinking is that this could be an angle to her show. When Tom tells her the reason for the boom box, Finley offers to give him love advice. However, as they get to know each other, feelings start to grow. Can two people that have so much in common, realize that what they have in front of them, is worth fighting for.
My biggest beef with this book was that the story REALLY lags and 1\2 of it becomes irrelevant. Honestly, I read to 35% ...and then skipped to 90% because it was moving so slow. I didn't miss ANYTHING! Skipping over half of the book and picking up at the end should have left me SO confused.....because, SOMETHING is supposed to happen in the middle! It didn't!

In all fairness, the overall story was pretty good. However, it has been done SO MANY TIMES in this genre that the author should have tried to make it a little different. The basic story is... princess of a conquered kingdom.... Childhood friend encourages her to start a rebellion...there's a prince involved...and she is conflicted over having feelings for multiple people! ...that's a oversimplified version, but know what I talking about, right? ...this storyline has been done SO MANY TIMES I can't help but compare it with others where it was executed better.
“I am a princess made of ashes, after all. I can’t help but fall apart”

Never again will I hear the name Theodosia and think of Hamilton. It will now bring up the smart, strong and determined Queen of Astrea. This book was a slower start for me but when I got slightly past the halfway mark I could not put it down!

Ash Princess tells the story of Theodosia who is the Princess of Astrea, or was the princess before her mother, the queen, was murdered before her eyes by the Kalovaxians. Since that moment she has grown up in her palace but under the Kalovaxians rule, specifically the Kaiser. The Kaiser has done everything in his power to beat the Princess of Astrea out of Theo and leave only Thora, the Ash Princess, in its wake. We meet Thora as a grown woman whose only thoughts are of survival in this world. She walks, talks and acts like the perfect subservent Kalovaxian lady. But when the Kaiser has her do an unforgivable act, we start to see the emergence of the woman she has kept buried for so long. With some help from an old friend and a couple new ones, Theo begins to plan to take back her kingdom. But nothing ever goes according to plan and Theo has some very tough choices to make between her kingdom and her heart.

Overall I really, really enjoyed this book! I really enjoyed the characters especially Theo and Blaise and even Soren. Although love triangles aren’t really my thing this one felt a bit different because you know who she should pick but you can’t help but love the other guy as well. The world building was beautiful but we didn’t get to see as much of the world as I would hope. But it seems like in book 2 we are going to get to explore a lot more! There were a couple of plots twists that I saw coming and then one that literally stopped me in my tracks (if you’ve read this book YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!). I literally stared at the page with my mouth hanging open not knowing what just hit me, probably a ton of bricks.

I do have to put out a warning that this book is pretty intense and has a lot of abuse, both physical and mental. I thought it really helped us see and understand how Theo became the woman we first meet and how through this abuse she becomes this stronger (or she hopes) woman. Overall I highly recommend this book!! Did I mention the TWO MAPS!! It was such an engaging read and I am dying for book 2!!! Seriously is it 2019 yet???
I could not stop reading this book the moment I picked it up. Laura Sebastian snares you on page 1, and the action and stakes keep building and building until it’s 4 am and you are awed and shocked and full of all the feelings, so glad to have stayed up all night reading. Theo is everything you want in a heroine determined, gritty, clever, ready to do whatever it takes to help not just herself and her friends but her people. It is incredible watching her journey as she first must believe in herself then rise to the occasion. And the surprises! Just when you think you know what might happen, the book throws in a new twist. The ending is a high-stakes, amazing stunner. And Blaise, Soren, Cress, Artemesia, Heron—these are characters you will fall in love with and want to read about again and again. I just wish I had the pleasure of reading Ash Princess for the first time all over again. I cannot wait for the second book in the series!

Ash Princess is perfect for fans of Red Queen and Ember in the Ashes, but in my opinion, it's far better. Read it, and it will become your new favorite.
I think I have a new favorite Cross brother. Jase & Bethany’s chemistry is off the charts. This book is intense, mysterious and of course there is the hot AF sex. Willow has once again captivated me with not only the story but also the characters. Once you start reading you will not want to stop. The ending ugh I need the next book ASAP. Truly an amazing read that I hope everyone one clicks.
Jase and Bethany are amazing. Their chemistry is beyond hot! This story is heart breaking, sexy and but wrenching. The hell these two have been through is crazy. They are in dire need to self each other. Can't wait for book two
Omg, I wish I can give more then five star because I would. It was such a page turner which I was not able to put it down. It was hot and sexy. I think I have a new love Jase sorry Carter. But the ending really girl.. So need book two of their story now.🖤
I have no words for Jase and Bethany. I hung on every word in this book. The suspense and actions between the two of them was hot. The pull they have towards each other is so electrifying.
Omg! Another Cross brother, another crush! Damn, if this keeps up I’m gonna fall in love with the whole family!

In this story, Jase Cross becomes infatuated with one Bethany Fawn. She is feisty, she’s got attitude bigger than her but most of all she is mourning...the loss of her sister Jenny puts Bethany in a downward spiral that has her chasing down answers in the wrong way and drawing attention to herself that Jase Cross doesn’t want on him or his family.

I gotta tell you, so far Willow has sucked me into Jase’s world so deep, I don’t know if I can crawl out anytime soon. This is only the beginning and I am gearing up to ride this Cross brother’s story till the end....
This is a fantastic book. I love Willow’s writing style. She sends you through a series of emotions and by the end you are in love with her characters. The Cross boys all have demons but Jase carries his and everyone else’s. You root for him and Bethany from the beginning because they are both fighting demons and together they at least forget them for a while. Jase is by far my most favorite Cross. He has softness that he wants to give but can’t......you will have to read to find out why.
5 CAPTIVATING STARS!! I was captivated with Jase and Bethany's story all the way through. This story had me on the edge of my seat with all the unknown, sexiness and suspense. I can't wait to get more of their story soon, I am so engrossed in these two. W. Winters is phenomenal in her storytelling and always a 1-Click for me.
Brace yourselves - 'A Single Glance' will have you reaching out for something to steady you!!
Holy mother of all things fictional!!
Folks- This book, is an intense, provocative, plot twisted, messy, break your heart in two kind of read. The characters just scream they need to tell you their story!
Willow continues to amaze me with the stories, and worlds she creates. Jase and Bethany's torrent of pain, lust, and connection - I am all in and ready for more!
I have a new favorite Cross brother and story!

Siren Song The Storm Siren Trilogy Mary Weber Books

Nym is a character that is deeply flawed. She's rash, indecisive, and overly emotional. It doesn't help that her elemental power of controlling lightning is vastly affected by her emotions. However, as a reader, her emotions always felt right and reasonable on account of her past.

Nym is struggling to bring about the end to a man named Draewulf, who's more beast than man. By killing all 5 of the royal bloodlines, he hopes to achieve immortality. He comes very far in his quest to obtain it, and it's astonishing how greedy and brutal he can be. He's by far one of the most nuanced villains I've read recently. Each potential royal kill will give him powers he seeks.

While I'm on the topic of our royals, the Queen of Cashlin, Queen Laiha, is a powerful Luminescent, a woman who's seer's sight is formidable. Weber dives deeper into the world she's created, and we get more of a glimpse of other lands. Queen Laiha's land is by far the most eerie. When I read the scene about their ancestors being entombed to be made like statues, where the stench of death permeated the air, my skin crawled and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. It was like watching a car crash, it was crazy to read but I just couldn't stop. I was grossly fascinated, and Weber's imagery with this scene was impeccable.

I can't review this book without discussing the romance between Nym and King Eogan. I found them to be both infuriating and endearing. A first for me, actually. Eogan is very secretive, sometimes to the point of infuriation. I completely sympathized with Nym during those moments where she felt lost and confused in regards to Eogan's feelings. He holds himself back because he feels like their quick romance did not start under the best circumstances. She's supposed to be property, and Nym is fighting for her freedom and for the hidden land's freedom as well. To Eogan, this feels contradictory, and he believes he has no right to claim her. The discussion they have at the end about this topic, definitely felt like a long time coming.

This brings me to Nym and what she symbolizes. She's viewed as a beacon of hope, like many of the protagonist in books like these. However, there was a dark undertone to the adoration that her followers had for her. The scene that made my stomach clench was when she was on tour to rally support for the war, and two men yanked and cut her hair, and cut off a piece of the garment she was wearing. It felt like a dark and perverse adoration, and I deeply appreciated this flip side view of what it means to be a martyr sometimes. Weber sheds light on the fact that not all followers who worship a deity or deity-like figure, have pure intentions. It's a critique on religion and how blind faith can have harsh consequence. It's important to have faith in something, but to have faith in something real, tangible, and with an open perspective. Blind faith can cause you to lose reason, as we saw Nym's followers did in that enlightening scene.

Lastly, the end. All I can say is, I thought I almost had a Veronica Roth situation about to go down. And I almost was about to go bonkers. That's all I will say.

Siren's Song is enthralling, political, deeply controversial, full of blood, war, and intense emotions. The Storm Siren trilogy is a definite must-read. You will not regret it.

Siren Song The Storm Siren Trilogy Mary Weber Books Reviews

This book takes you on a journey of self discovery, love and healing! The author makes you feel the heartache of trauma Nym faced throughout her life. Her story inspired you to feel the emotions as if they are your own. I felt stronger after reading these books! The story is brought full circle and you feel quite satisfied with the ending!
I can't describe the depth of meaning this tale had on my lost heart. You revived in me hope, passion, and a beauty in seeing a character discover who she is and where she came from; scars and all. It related to my life's journey on so many revealed and wondrous levels.
Face-paced, epic, and full of twists, some of which made we yell NOOOO! This one starts off just after SIREN'S FURY (book two) closes, so you're thrown right back into the action. No time to catch your breath. And then it's game on with a fast and furious pace for the rest of the story. Nym and Eogan make a wonderful pair and balance each other well. I love how Nym struggles with her dark side--who wouldn't with her past? Looking forward to Weber's next series featuring Sofi Snow.
Have you gotten the feeling lately that some of the books you've been reading feel similar? You know, elementals tossing around fire/lightening, evil-doers/evil spirits inhabiting the living, main characters being revealed as secret royalty?

Yeah.

So while there is no new idea under the sun, it was the characters in the Storm Siren trilogy that won me over. I like Nym and the others, and I cared about what happened to them, which is more than I can say about some other series.

I highly recommend the Storm Siren trilogy. While the middle booked dragged a little bit, this final installment was great and did not disappoint.
Siren’s Song by Mary Weber was an engrossing read. She really sucks you into Nym’s unique, often scary world and Nym herself is as original as the land she lives in. In this book, which picks up right where the second one leaves off, Nym is desperately trying to rally all peoples for one last desperate fight against the evil Draewulf, who would consume them all, and his wraith army; a lot of pressure for an ex-slave who can barely control her superpowers. Especially since she’s still haunted by the decisions she made previously, the nightmares of what will happen if she fails, and the fact that the man she loves is on the line… as well as the guy she can barely stand yet can’t help liking. This book will keep the pages turning. The entire trilogy is very interesting- and intense- and I heartily recommend it to everyone. My thanks to Thomas Nelson’s Fiction Guild for my copy the opinions are my own honest ones.
Might not quite be the ending you want but does fully complete the story and the series. Once again well written and fast paced with lots of twists and turns to keep you interested.

If you read the first two books you won't need any recommendation to read this one too. However, as there seems to be a lot of series out there at the moment where the third book is just crap, this one is not. It progresses everything from the earlier books to a complete conclusion.
I loved this series. It was unique, new and refreshing, to me at least. I am well over the age that YA books are written for, but they are by far my favorite genre to read. This series is no exception and I believe one of the best I have ever read. We see Nym grow so much and it's hard to believe all that happens during this time. I fell in love with so many of these wonderful characters and wish I could sit down and have a conversation with so many of them. Mary wrote in such a way I felt like I was right there with them during all the action. I don't want to say much else about this book so you can read for yourself and find out what happens, but I highly recommend this series and I will be reading it again in the future! Great job Mary!

Snow in Love Point Paperbacks Melissa de la Cruz Aimee Friedman Nic Stone Kasie West 9781338310184 Books

Here are my reviews of each one of the four stories in this sweet holiday compilation:

1. Snow and Mistletoe by Kasie West (5 stars)
An adorable story about a girl going in a last-minute road trip with a former classmate, his two crazy friends and his older sister. The ending was so cute it left me smiling. Who wouldn't like to spend 3 days in a car with the swoon-worthy Sawyer and his friends? This story alone made it worth the price of the entire book for me. I also loved the scene on Las Vegas, it made me want to go there again. Another win for Kasie West!

2. Working in a Winter Wonderland by Aimee Friedman (4 stars)
A story about a Jewish girl spending her winter holidays in NY trying to win the heart of her crush by working as Santa’s elf in a high-end store. I really liked that it was set during Hanukkah, however, the romance felt a little forced to me. We didn’t get to know the hero too well, as the first part of the book was focused on something else. It had some fun moments though, and I liked the setting and the cast of characters.

3. The Magi’s Gifts by Melissa de la Cruz (4 1/2 stars)
A sweet story about a lower middle class girl trying to find the perfect Christmas gift for her boyfriend and trying to impressing her rich, snooty friends at the same time. Although the ending made me feel a tiny bit sad, I really liked this story and its focus on happiness for the ones we love being worth any sacrifice. Extra points for focusing on the true spirit of Christmas.

4. Grounded by Nic Stone (2 stars)
The "non-heteronormative" (i.e. gay) romance promoting “diversity” that seems to be mandatory nowadays in any YA collection, featuring an African-American/Jewish girl falling for another girl and feeling confused about it. The beginning of the story was a long series of texts between the heroine and her best friend that was extremely hard to read on my Kindle due to the small font, and the quality of the writing didn’t seem to me to be on par with the rest of the stories in this collection. Couldn't finish it.

In summary, the first 3 stories were worth my time and I definitely plan on reading them again on Christmas. Kudos to the authors for a job well done. :)
Good book
I wanted to wait closer to Christmas to read this, but for some reason the holidays always bring out a contemp romance feeling in me so I "accidentally" picked this one up lol And not to be cliche or anything, but I'm so glad I did! This was EXACTLY what I needed at this time.
Snow and Mistletoe by Kasie West was one of my favorites. It was completely sweet and set the tone for the rest of the book. It completely obliterated my reasoning for not being a huge fan of anthologies because short stories never really feel complete. This one definitely did like its own story all on its own. As for the characters, I loved all of them. They were all so fun and so interacted so well with each other. The romance itself was super swoony and I really enjoyed seeing them get together.
In Aimee Friedman's Working in a Winter Wonderland, I really enjoyed this one too. It definitely felt more real than the first story. A real girl, trying to get money so she can buy this one amazing thing so this one amazing boy will follow. And then things don't exactly happen as she thinks they will. This was filled with so much holiday realness and magic and I actually enjoyed this one a lot more than I expected. (I've never read anything by Friedman before so I was a little skeptical.) It didn't go in the way that I expected, and I think that's what I enjoyed most about it.
In Melissa de la Cruz's The Magi's Gifts, I wasn't really that into it. Being honest, it reminded me of the Disney show, Mickey and Minnie's The Gift of the Magic. This was a nice retelling of the O. Henry story, but I just didn't find it worked with teens. I just can't see a teen boy selling what he did in the story. I know that's the point, but ehh, it just didn't work for me.
As for Nic Stone's Grounded, I really liked this one. It was fun and wasn't overly "Christmas-y" and I think that's what I loved most about it. It was around the holidays, but it could be enjoyed at any time. I really loved so versatile it was. And also that scavenger hunt was super legit lol Her clues were SO. GOOD. I kept thinking of it in Nic Stone's voice as she's rapping it lol It was pretty awesome.
Overall this anthology was just what I needed. It really scratched my itch for multiple things I've been wanting to read. I'm glad I didn't wait to read this any longer than I did. These authors and their work actually worked really well together for a nice sweet read that I really enjoyed.
Kasie West's story in this compilation was just as great as her books. Even in a novella, she managed to create depth to the characters and made me care about and like them and want to root for them. That being said, the other three stories were just okay. The romance in the second story basically didn't develop at all until the last couple of pages, which then felt rushed and not authentic at all. The third story was a retelling of Gift of the Magi, and was cute but obviously predictable. And I didn't even read the last story, just skimmed it, as much of it was told through awkward text message conversations, the kind with misspelled on purpose dialogue and slang which I found obnoxious. So basically, all 3 of these stars are for Kasie West, who is the whole reason I bought the book. Next time I will stick to her solo novels.
